I/D Responds to Bishop's Politicking at Mass

In 2006, the Wisconsin State Legislature put the rights and duties of many Wisconsin families up to public referendum, proposing a state Constitutional ban on marriage or anything "substantially similar" for any couples other than heterosexuals.  Though 99 communities defeated this ban and its strongest proponents were voted out of office, statewide it passed and became not just a law, but part of the State Constitution itself.

Crossing the line separating Church and State, Madison's bishop claimed to represent the Church as he testified in favor of this Constitutional ban, permitted campaign literature to be displayed inside and outside church buildings, and later forced all priests in his diocese to play his recorded message at Sunday Mass.  I/D joined many Catholics and others who stood up in opposition to his political campaign by churches against our civil rights.
